Rich and Colorful Indian Wedding Dresses

As we are all aware, brides all over the world choose diverse dresses for their special day – their wedding day. The dazzling wedding dresses worn by an Indian bride is very dissimilar from the white colored western wedding dress, yet it continues to capture the attention of every fashion designer around the world. An Indian wedding dress is projected with the best design and intricate work of the craftsman and comes in several shades and beautiful needlework of different kinds. It is the special day in the life of the bride and her Indian wedding dress needs to reflect it. An Indian wedding dress usually comes in bright colors and with complex designs.

Most wedding dresses worn by western brides come in the shades of white but Indian wedding dresses are often made in the shades of red not only because it highlights the delicate work done on the fabric but also the red color is considered to be very auspicious in India.

Different Types of Indian Wedding Dresses
Depending on the region, Indian wedding dresses will also vary. North Indian wedding dresses usually as a ghagra choli or with a salwar kameez. But if the bride is from south India then her wedding dress will be a sari. Most westerners have participated in an Indian wedding where the bride has dressed on her special day in a sari. The Indian wedding saris are usually woven in silk with rich borders of zari. Zari refers to gold thread that is mixed with silk and has elaborate needle work. Part of the sari that is draped across the shoulder of the bride is called pallu and is rich in zari work.

The dresses preferred by an Indian bride will be made of silk, silk with threads of satin or pure chiffon which will have delicate embroidery of either gold thread or beadwork of semi precious stones. Some Indian wedding dress can also be made of pure gold and silk thread which gives it a rich color and reflects an impressive grandeur.

Indian Wedding Dresses and Jewellery
Indian wedding dress also comes with heavy jewellery which could be either made in gold, diamonds, or a combination of both. Indian wedding dresses invariably comes with attractive bangles which could be again made of gold or gold embellished precious stones like diamonds, emeralds, rubies, etc.

Other equally interesting frills are available with Indian wedding dresses and they come in the form of necklaces, costume jewelry, rings, earrings, or hair styles on an Indian bride. It is all part of the adornment of the bride on her wedding day.

Both Indian and western wedding dresses are similar in their rich wedding dresses. Most of western wedding dresses come in white color where as Indian wedding dresses usually come in rich colors of red, green, purple, maroon, pink, yellow, etc.
Apart from traditional wedding sarees, the salwar kameez also forms an attractive Indian wedding dress. The style of a salwar kameez as an Indian wedding dress varies and comes in different designs and patterns. Typically it comes with trouser salwar suits and a top kurta suit. Both the suits are embossed with rich gold and silver threads and can also have rich bead work of matching colors. The Indian wedding dress in the form of a salwar kameez, comes with a head gear called dupatta which again reflects the craftsmanship of the designer. The advantage of this beautiful dress is it can worn often at a party after your marriage.

The other style of Indian wedding dresses are Lehenga cholis. This is the gift of Moguls to the rich Indian tradition of wedding dresses. The dress constitutes a large skirt with innumerable pleats paired with a short top suit that is called a blouse. Both come with matching colors and with rich needle work which gives it a royal look.

The conventional lehengas were embroidered with gota and motis (cultured pearls). Thread work done on lehengas were usually designed with Zardosi and teamed with bangles for this exceptional occasion. Modern lehengas are new versions which are a right fit for the bride. The upper outfit the bodice (choli) is usually short with bright and divergent colors. The colors previously used for this Indian wedding dress were red, and green but these day newer colors are being tried out like shades of lime or peach or skyblue.

Lehengas can come with heavy embroidery in satin, dabka, brocade or zardosi, hand woven bead work, attractive crystals, gold thread work with colored threads nalki and sequins. Some brides opt for a special kind of work done exclusively on fabrics called kutki, tilla and meenakari. Fabrics preferred on this particular style of Indian wedding dress will be satin, silk, or mix-and-match satin and georgettes. 

It has a traditional look -uniquely corporeal bridal wear. The word Lehenga is generally associated with a capacious paneled skirt that is smaller than the ghagra and has some ghera conventionally. It can be worn with a shirt (kurti) and a broad (odhani). Lehenga cholis come with beautifully hand ornamented work of beads and silk threads. The brides of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana typically wear this style of Indian wedding dress.

This Indian wedding dress is completed with fine jewelry and ‘Mehendi’- colored design on the hands of the bride and with Bindi – the dot on the forehead. This beautiful Indian wedding dress has something magical about it, which wedding guests cannot but help noticing .It is this wedding dress that has captured the minds of poets from time immemorial.
