Irish Traditions Including the Dress, the Horseshoe, and the Jewelry

Believe it or not, there is more to an Irish themed wedding than a pint of beer. You have to think about an Irish wedding dress, Irish bands, Irish vows, and when to get married. According to the Irish, “if you marry in May, you will rue the day.” If you are looking to get married and follow some of the traditions of the Irish in order to celebrate your heritage, or to just celebrate a beautiful country that has deep roots, it is not as hard as you may think.

When you select an Irish wedding dress you will have to find a seamstress for these types of dresses are not everywhere. Many people confuse the Irish wedding dress with dresses from the medieval era, Celtic dresses, or Scottish dresses. An Irish wedding dress is made from two pieces. There is the undergarment piece that looks like a shirt with puffed sleeves and possible lace at the scooped neckline. Another part of the gown is the corset that is usually made from an elaborate fabric such as velvet or satin and it fits over the top of the undershirt. You may use different colors to represent the top and the bottom of the dress or you can make the gown uniform in color. There are other resources that can give you pictures of typical Irish wedding gowns throughout history.

There are other traditions that you may follow when you are having an Irish ceremony besides outfitting the wedding party. You should choose the day that you get married carefully. The Irish consider the last day of the year to be particularly lucky, and we already talked about the May thing. The Irish also consider sunshine to be a sign of luck while rain is considered to be unlucky. Make sure that you choose a day that prophesizes good luck.

Jewelry always plays a particular role in any wedding and an Irish ceremony is no different. The traditional Irish wedding ring is known a claddagh wedding band. You may have seen one before with the heart attached to the band. In an Irish ceremony your spouse would place the ring on the left hand of the bride with the heart facing inside. When the heart faces the inside you are telling the world that your heart is taken forever. You can also have a child present you, the bride, with a horseshoe and put it into your bouquet at the end of the ceremony. The horseshoe is also a symbol of luck and a representation that your union is going to last forever.

You must also think of food when you plan your Irish wedding. A typical Irish cake is a fruitcake that is filled with almonds, raisins, cherries and spices. The cake is also laced with brandy or bourbon. There are many variations of this cake that can be found in the search engines online and you can either make the cake yourself or list a professional to make one for you. The Irish believe that food represents love and hospitality, and the average Irishman consumes 3,000 to 5,000 calories a day. You may want to include a lot of different meats such as roast beef, steak, lamb chops, or pork into your wedding menu. The Irish are also found of stews and soups, so an appetizer may include a hearty soup with it.

Also try to incorporate potatoes into your meal. In Ireland it is not uncommon to see four different kinds of potato dishes at the same meal. If you are trying to keep your wedding authentic, you won’t be serving corned beef and cabbage. The corned beef and cabbage is a mere translation of what the Irish eat and it is inaccurate, although bacon and cabbage is considered popular among the Irish culture. Also don’t forget to give a special toast to the guest that introduced you and your spouse at the reception. Many centuries ago there was a matchmaker who was responsible for many Irish weddings. When you salute your matchmaker you will be paying homage to an old tradition of the Irish people.

Many people have decided to toss out the theme of the Irish wedding and plan to have their wedding in Ireland instead. Destination weddings have become all of the rage in recent years. Ireland is a beautiful country and it is a great excuse for many of your family and friends to escape. Plus, you will be able to find the perfect venue, food, and Irish wedding dress because it will be right at your fingertips. You will also not have to pay for a honeymoon because you will be at a perfect place to wander and explore for a week after your wedding. Whatever type of wedding you decide to have, make sure that it represents you as an individual so that you can remember your special day forever.
